Webinar by Dr. Joy Gabrielli on "Associations Between Maltreatment History and Severity of Substance Use Behaviour in Youth in Foster Care"

Synopsis: Youth exposed to maltreatment and residing in foster care are at increased risk for a range of negative developmental outcomes, one of which is substance use.  Many youth in foster care were removed from their biological caregivers who were substance abusing, and parental substance use is a known risk factor for early substance use initiation and progression to substance use problems in youth.  Moreover, youth in foster care have experienced numerous disruptions in their social support systems, have higher rates of school failure and dropout, have higher levels of chronic life stress, and demonstrate lower levels of coping than youth in the general population - all identified risk factors for substance use problems. This presentation will address child and system-level risk factors for substance use in youth in foster care as well as provide information on how maltreatment and coping relate to substance use behavior in foster youth from a recent study conducted with 210 youth in care.

Presenter: Dr. Joy Gabrielli is a research fellow at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. Her appointment is through a T32 program entitled "The Science of Co-Occurring Disorders" a research training grant designed to advance researcher skills and knowledge on the conduct of science related to substance use and co-occurring disorders.  During her graduate training at the University of Kansas, Dr. Gabrielli served as database manager and statistical coordinator for a longitudinal research study, Studying Pathways to Resilience in Kids (SPARK), an NIH-funded project on mechanisms of risk and resilience in youth in foster care.  She obtained a predoctoral training award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study substance use behavior in the SPARK Project as an adjunct to the overarching aims of the parent project. Her presentation titled, "Substance Use in Youth in Foster Care: Examination of Child, Maltreatment History, and System-Related Factors" will include information obtained from this project.
